"Driftless Farm chooses not to certify our produce. Our reason is that we are a very small farm that sells directly to our costumers. They hold us accountable to very high standards of sustainable, chem-free practices. Certification is expensive, and we probably won't choose that route until we think our customers demand it.
That said, we use no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides. All soil amendments we use are certified organic. We choose organic seed when available.
My training and background is only in sustainable and organic growing. I have worked on certified organic farms and know many of the practices involved. We follow them here at Driftless, and often go above and beyond.
Located in 140 acres of woods, our soils haven't been farmed by any one in hundreds of years (we've found stone hoes on our land from way long ago!). They are rich and we work hard to put nutrients back into them each year through green manures, compost, worm castings, and very little soil exposure."
